This post will examine a very serious issue facing our nation! As an American and a Liberal Social Democrat I believe both political parties have to do some serious talking to each other, preferably outside of camera view! Democrats and Republicans must do that in order to place the nation first when it comes to nuclear proliferation! As I mentioned three years ago in a post called, “Iran: An Inconvenient Truth – A Populist Prospective“, we may indeed have to use some type of military force. Yes and this is coming from a Liberal Social Democrat. Below is a short video of Iran’s first satellite launching into space! What would happen if she developed nuclear weapons!
Let me present to you some points that we don’t want to face that hits both sides of the political spectrum! Then I will go into detail on each point. Consider these points:
- We cannot allow Iran (or any rogue nation) to have nuclear weapons – PERIOD!
- The issue is not Israel, the issue is our national security! Be afraid! Fear sometimes is justified.
- Sanctions are a joke. They only buy time but there comes a time when action is required.
- Renegade unchecked Capitalism which places profits over patriotism is part of the reason we are in this mess along with the masochistic tendencies of PC Liberals.
- George Bush and his vast right wing Social Engineering Experiment in Iraq have undermined the military deterrence of our nation.
- We must know our strengths and limits for both our military and political power! The issues I raise here go beyond the normal liberal – conservative gap.
- If we do have to use surgical strikes against Iran then naturally the patriotic thing to do for the oil companies is to submit to nationalization! After all they are “persons” and why shouldn’t they be drafted for the national good?
Below is an excerpt from the “Count Down With Keith Oblermann Show“. He is a noted liberal whom I admire but I have some issues with him concerning Iran.
Notice one of his liberal guests actually saying that if we do attack it will only be a “delaying action” that will make the Iranians mad at us. The guest believes, and I assume Keith Olbermann concurs since he did not disagree, that we cannot stop Iran from obtaining nukes and we don’t want to make them mad now do we?
Note this plays right into the hands of those who attack liberals for being weak and apologizing to America’s enemies! Let me now go through each of the seven points I made above.
(1). We cannot allow Iran (or any rogue nation) to have nuclear weapons – PERIOD!
Well as liberals we do believe in “ethical and cultural relativism” right? Well I believe our nation should never have allowed any other nation to acquire nuclear weapons! Our planet will pay the price for not being decisive in the late 40′s. If we had instituted PAX AMERICA then we would not be in the situation we are today nor would my generation have grown up in the age of M.A.D. (Mutually Assured Destruction).
Politically Correct Liberals will say:
- America does not have the right to be the sole owners of nuclear weapons?
- Letting the Soviets have nukes gave us a balance!
I could not disagree more!
Yet these very same people will lecture us about the dangers to our planet from green house gases! I think the nuclear winter that would have been unleashed by a nuclear war would have hurt our environment too! Why would we need to have the Soviets balance us? That is unless you don’t believe in America! The problem is that conservatives really do have a point here! Many liberals do feel guilty about being American! It really is true as conservatives assert, “Liberals apologize for being Americans”! This liberal is not ashamed about being an American. And if faced with M.A.D. or Pax Americana, I choose Pax Americana. Again pay attention to the video above where Keith’s guest asserts the joys of impotency in the face of nuclear proliferation! While other nations have nukes we can at least stop Iran and North Korea from obtaining nukes. I would use what ever force it takes! Make no mistake sanctions will not work!
(2) The issue is not Israel, the issue is our national security! Be afraid indeed and this from a Liberal Social Democrat!
That’s right “Be Afraid – Be very afraid”! Sometimes fear is justified. The issue is not Israel vs. Iran rather it is the dangers that Iran and North Korea bring to us. They don’t even need missile delivery systems. They could sell their nukes to terrorists!
(3) Sanctions are a joke. They only buy time but there comes a time when we have to act!
John McCain was correct that when you point a gun you have to have creditable deterrence that you will fire if need be! The problem is that his fellow traveler, “George Bush” has destroyed American military creditability. But I will discuss that further down.
(4). Renegade unchecked Capitalism is part of the reason we are in this mess along with the masochistic tendencies of PC Liberals,
Yes I blame both conservatives and liberals for the mess with Iran and North Korea! European corporations rushed to get a piece of the action in assisting Iran in it’s nuclear program.
Some of our corporations have aided Iran with the transfer of military technology from our nation to Iran for a profit. Halliburton had a Iranian subsidiary. General Electric also sold our conventional military technology to Iran for a profit. Renegade Capitalism is part of the reason we face nuclear proliferation because our conventional military deterrence has been weakened by those who place profit over nation!
But liberals also present a problem when it comes to rogue states. PC Liberals love to wallow in collective guilt. True they have forsaken the old Adam and Eve story that says man shares collective guilt because of Adam and Eve eating some stupid apple. Hence humanity is allegedly stained. Liberals have wisely relinquished this collective guilt only to adapt a secular version.
Now it is the terrible white middle class American who rapes the planet. How dare we go beyond sanctions? After all what right do we have? I disagree! Sure we made mistakes but the thrust is on impotent collective guilt rather than making the world even a little better.
Currently more liberals today are jettisoning this nonsense but if you listen to the video clip above you hear the old impotent liberal stereotype. The problem is that it is not a conservative doing it but the liberal on Keith Olmbermann’s show when he says we cannot stop Iran from getting nukes! – Wrong. We just have to believe in our right to do it and we do have that right. Again we do believe in “cultural relativism” now don’t we as liberals?
(5) George Bush and his vast right wing Social Engineering Experiment in Iraq have undermined the military deterrence of our nation!
McCain just does not get it. Dictators don’t fear being overthrown and replaced by a democracy! No they simply fear being overthrown! When we went into Iraq if we left in a few months after setting up a new government our military deterrence would have soared. But when we changed the definition of “victory” from simply overthrowing the bad guy to also replacing Saddam Hussein with a democracy we then tied up our military for years.
- Iran and North Korea realized our military is tied down!
- They also noticed that Americans (even liberal the MSNBC) got caught up in “Shock and Awe” where we excelled! MSNBC for several years played reruns of the Iraq invasion. But once the definition of “victory” was expanded to completing a vast social engineering experiment America became impotent!
- Finally if we say we will not allow them to have nukes then why are we building a limited Missile Defense System against rogue nations? Bush pointed a gun and showed that he did not intend to use it else why would we have this limited Missile Defense System. Such a system is predicated that rogue states will have nuclear weapons!
John McCain does not realize that when we point a gun at an enemy, that enemy now realizes the gun is blank!
George Bush and McCain made our guns impotent by their protracted occupation of Iraq. Since we could have been finished with Iraq years ago, in which case our gun would have potency against new enemies! This leads us to my sixth point.
(6). We must be honest and know our strengths and limits for both our military and political power! The issues I raise here go beyond the normal liberal – conservative gap.
We excel at “Shock and Awe” but prefer not to involve ourselves in a protracted war or occupation. Fine! We must KNOW that when we choose our battles rather than letting the enemy decide the battle field. If we do go to war with either Iran or North Korea we must utilize our “Shock and Awe” Military technology. That is unless the enemies of America, that is to say our corporations, have not sold that technology to our enemies! Night vision technology was sold to Iran.
While I am talking about our strengths and weaknesses let me state that I would torture members of Al Qaeda. That’s right I am a liberal and I would torture. My point is I would be blunt and state that we would torture the leadership of Al Qaeda! We should be decisive and not say water boarding isn’t torture because it is. But we need to follow the Alan Dorchowitz proposal and get a court warrant that is public.
While on the subject of “honesty” I believe we liberals should not be willing to allow conservatives or Republicans to steal the issue of “national security”! If the question is to torture and kill a few Al Qaeda members or else see conservatives defeat the progressive agenda for America then I say torture and “Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran”!
If we were subjected to WMD our constitution would be at risk from the limited minds of the Sarah Palin crowd. We must avert that at all costs!
As liberals we must be willing to have our nation torture a few terrorists leaders to avert WMD and avert a public perception of liberals as weak that could lead to a Tea Party victory! Now we liberals do believe in ethical relativism don’t we?
(7), If we do have to use surgical strikes against Iran then naturally the patriotic thing to do for the oil companies is to submit to nationalization until the crises is over!
Invading Iran is out of the question. But our objective is not Iran’s occupation but destroying Iran’s capability to have nukes. Hopefully the moderate elements of the population who are trying to revolt now will succeed. But if they don’t we must use surgical strikes!
Iran may hit the oil fields of the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. The patriotic thing to do then is for oil companies to be nationalized! I believe we have a non-nuclear bomb called a “MOAB” that can penetrate underground bunkers. Also if the Iranians attempted to use their army against Iraq or the Gulf States we could surgically destroy their economy by hitting factories, dams and even the food chain. We can beat them with “Shock and Awe”. If pushed to act we must be decisive!
I believe that because McCain and Bush stood by while Iran and North Korea built up their enrichment plants for years future American Presidents will pay the price! Bush and McCain supported wasting our troops and money on their vast wild eyed unfunded Republican Social Engineering Experiment in Iraq! Thus our military deterrence has been diminished! But the American people will not stand by if we are hit by WMD. I believe in the “Bush Doctrine”. But Bush failed in the use of his own doctrine because he wasted our troops, finances and world creditability in a protracted war in Iraq! When Pakistan realized we had abandoned our mission in Afghanistan they then made peace with the radicals in their western territories! They did so because Bush abandoned military deterrence in Afghanistan against Al Qaeda!
Republicans must cease to support profit over nation and PC liberals must end their quest for making Americans feel guilty for taking charge of the anti-nuclear proliferation movement! If PC liberals really believe there is no God then it is WE who must act to defend the Earth from a nuclear holocaust. We are just lucky that our prior self doubt did not cost the earth it’s future when we walked away from our duty in the late 1940’s.
Well now I guess a Social Democrat is not always a dove on defense!
